I hoped it wouldn't come to this...a rant

When I started making captions 2 years ago, I thought I'd be lucky to get a handful of followers on my blog.  I create and post caps that I enjoy, and I hope that some of you might as well.  Up until now, I've avoided adding a watermark to my captions because I didn't want to interfere with the look of the caption.

This morning, I found out that some of my captions were posted on DeviantArt by a user attempting to give the impression that my work is his own.  It seems that I have hit the level of easy pickings for immature people out there that feel the need to bump their own ego by claiming the work of others.

I've worked up a simple watermark that I hope I can easily work into my future captions.  I'll do my best to keep it unobtrusive, but it may be a bit of a work in progress.  I'm truly sorry that it has come to this.

If you'd like to copy and repost my captions, that's fine.  Please make sure you credit me and consider pointing back to my blog if you do.

To the ones who steal credit for the work of others... I keep all original copies of the captions I make, which are often multi-layered and higher resolution than what I post.  I will always have proof that my work is my own.

  1. You might want to let DeviatArt know what this creep is doing. Other than that Good for You and keep up the good work!

  3. The same thing happened to me a few years ago. I stumbled across a yahoo group that had a few of my captions on them. They were posted by some nineteen year old kid that never responded to my caustic comments. In the end all I could do is I had the administrator remove the images. Thats when I started putting my logo on all my work.

I hope it works out for you.

  4. if they used links from your site you could always remove them or rename them so that they don't work on his site.

Another thing you might try is redesigning his site so that he won't like the picture of course this again requires links.

  5. I appreciate the support and suggestions. My first step is to post comments to the offending DA uploads asking for clarification. The next step will be reporting the offense to DA.

I don't mind people copying and sharing the caps. What I do mind is when someone takes credit for work they didn't do. That looks to be the case here, but we will see.

  6. I know who u are talking about and if you look at one of the captions they posted (someone elses post so he/she steals from others too) I said that I hope he/she had the permission or you casent to post them and the other caption makers too so now I know he/she went against the law (kinda I don't understand copyright laws that well).

  7. I noticed that a few days ago. I wanted to get in contact with you and tell you, but I couldn't find your email or anything listed so I just gave up. I've called the idiot out on his page, though, but he seems determined to convince everyone that it is his own work.

    What a jerk.

  8. Well, my simple comments on the posts asking for clarification garnered my a ban from commenting on the offender's posts. No, "Oh sorry." No nothing. Just hid my comments and ignored me.

Actions like that make me feel OK about filing 4 reports and getting the offender's whole DA account locked up for review.

Note to the offender: Thanks for making my choice so easy.

  9. Man, I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm with you, in that I don't want to add a watermark of any type t my caps, but after hearing about this, I am considering it.

I'm glad you tried to take the high road first. Some people are stupid, and don't get it. But his response tells you this isn't innocence or stupidity.

  12. I briefly considered removing that comment, but I really have nothing to hide. Yes, I use photos that I find online in the creation of my captions. No, I do not get prior approval from the creator to do so.

I do, however, state that I will honor the request of any photo content owner or person in one of the photos I use to request that an image be removed.

This incident pointed out that I had not previously provided adequate contact information for anyone to contact me. That was my error, and I apologize for that. There is now a new box under the disclaimer on the left that contains my contact info.

I would assume that had a content owner previously wanted an image removed, they would have made a comment on the offending post.

  14. That really does suck. And here I thought that your caption were distinctive enough that no one would try to pass them off as their own.

I may need to think about this in the future as well. I had thought that my uniqueness (in execution and world view) would keep that at bay. As Caitlyn mentioned, I would hate to have to start using a watermark as I consider them obtrusive, no matter how small or transparent they tend to be.

I think though that people like us with a good body of work built up would at least have friends and fans that could give us a heads up when it comes to thievery. Hope that person was taken care of as best you could!
